Search for Hypervelocity Stars One Parsec from the Galactic Center Ucla Physics & Astronomy Reu 2008

چکیده
The first hypervelocity stars, bodies with radial velocities greater than the escape speed of the Milky Way, have previously been observed only in the halo of our Galaxy. However, they are thought to originate near the Galactic center. We present the most extensive search to date for hypervelocity stars in this region. Our images were taken over a one year baseline with the W. M. Keck II 10 m telescope using laser guide star adaptive optics techniques to achieve diffractionlimited resolution in this very crowded field. Two candidates appear to be unbound to the Galactic center; to confirm their velocities, we will need to verify that they reside at the Galactic center, about 8 kpc from Earth. In addition, our analysis revealed that the optical distortion of our camera, OSIRIS, changed significantly between 2007 and 2008. We were able to correct for this effect for the purposes of this project, but would like to trace the distortion over a longer period of time in order to determine whether the change was due to a one-time disturbance or whether the OSIRIS distortion continuously changes with time.

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملRunaway and Hypervelocity Stars in the Galactic Halo: Binary Rejuvenation and Triple Disruption
Young stars observed in the distant Galactic halo are usually thought to have formed elsewhere, either in the Galactic disk or perhaps the Galactic center, and subsequently ejected at high velocities to their current position. However, some of these stars have apparent lifetimes shorter the required flight time from the Galactic disk/center. We suggest that such stars have evolved in close runa...
متن کاملRadial Velocities of Stars in the Galactic Center 1
We present results from K band slit scan observations of a ∼20×20 region of the Galactic center (GC) in two separate epochs more than five years apart. The high resolution (R = λ ∆λ ≥14, 000) observations allow the most accurate radial velocity and acceleration measurements of the stars in the central parsec of the Galaxy. Detected stars can be divided into three groups based on the CO absorpti...
متن کاملA Successful Targeted Search for Hypervelocity Stars
Hypervelocity stars (HVSs) travel with velocities so extreme that dynamical ejection from a massive black hole is their only suggested origin. Following the discovery of the first HVS by Brown and collaborators, we have undertaken a dedicated survey for more HVSs in the Galactic halo and present here the resulting discovery of two new HVSs: SDSS J091301.0+305120 and SDSS J091759.5+672238, trave...
متن کاملMmt Hypervelocity Star Survey
We describe a new survey for unbound hypervelocity stars (HVSs), stars traveling with such extreme velocities that dynamical ejection from a massive black hole (MBH) is their most likely origin. We investigate the possible contribution of unbound runaway stars, and show that the physical properties of binaries constrain low mass runaways to bound velocities. We measure radial velocities for HVS...
